I just wanted to say that I have learned SO MUCH from Peery teacher training and the Peery Method! Not only that but it has basically changed my professional life. The Peery Method teacher training program has been a great boost to my teaching. The Peery Method has helped give me language to use in addition to teaching by example. ONE TEACHER'S JOURNEY
I began piano lessons at age 5 with a great teacher, and developed a muscle memory of proper technique before I could even understand what was happening. As I grew up and had different teachers, some principles and techniques were reinforced, some not, some were given names, some were not - it was all very vague, even - and maybe especially - as I was in college as a piano performance major.
So as I began teaching piano lessons, I didn't have a complete working vocabulary or technical understanding that I could transmit to my students.
How do I get them to make this sound? Or, how do I get them to relax? Or, is it even important that they do X or Y?? I had a hard time transmitting information to my own students. And since my own technique wasn't reinforced consistently, I wasn't sure if that was even the right thing to do! For example, when I began teaching, I didn't even know if it was important to make students play with curved fingers! I did myself, but I didn't know if that was crucial.
I think what goes on a lot for piano students is, if the teacher doesn't have a system that can replicate the same results with any student, the student will either intuitively pick up on what needs to be done, or they won't. And then they will think they are talented, or they just aren't.
And if they aren't talented, they just give up because 'they just don't have what it takes'. This is a classic example to me of someone thinking they 'just can't get it' when really it is due to a lack on the part of the training. Which is why I think it is so important for teachers to be trained well.
With the Peery Method, the results have proven to be replicable with any student who follows the process.
Because of my Peery training which includes video certification to ensure I am understanding and teaching the techniques correctly, I can now say with complete assurance "ANYONE can do this who puts in the time". I can say it because I have seen it with my own students. Thanks to Peery, I can believe in the power of each individual student because of my own confidence in the way I present the material. I am always amazed - but never surprised - by brand new beginner students in my studio who end up passing older students in level simply because they start with a clear and strong foundation. If a student does not understand a concept, I will re-word and re-demonstrate until they know exactly what it feels like, sounds like, and looks like. The only barrier to my student's learning and growth now is the time they choose to put into it!
